About Bermuda, Bermuda

Bermuda, not a single island, but a chain of 138 islands located in the Northern Atlantic. Surrounded by coral reefs, it was once called “The Isle of Devils”, but those reefs have produced waters of fantastic hues of blues and greens, and beautiful pink sand beaches.

Once in Bermuda, you cannot help but relax. Throngs of flowers of spectacular beauty welcome you, and the lazy blue waters invite you out to take a sail or go snorkeling to discover the underwater treasures of the deep. For those who do not want to get wet, visit the Bermuda Aquarium and Zoo which features over 300 species of birds, reptiles and mammals, and over 200 species of fish. A special treat is the North Park Exhibit, a 140 000 gallon replica of a coral reef.

The Bermuda Underwater Exploration Institute displays dive technology from the past to the present, and a fantastic collection of shells from Bermuda and throughout the world. Follow the footsteps of renowned author Mark Twain and visit the underground beauty of Crystal Cave, with its 55 foot deep underground pool and incredible array of stalactites and stalagmites, and its sister, Fantasy Cave, which was discovered and developed in 1907.

For the history buffs, no visit is complete without a tour of St. Peter’s Anglican church in St. George’s, which was built in 1612 and is said to be the oldest continually used Anglican church in the western hemisphere. For a bit fun, try climbing the 155 steps to the top of the tower of The Cathedral in Hamilton, the capital, and you will be rewarded with panoramic views of the city.

Bermudians are a sporting people, and international matches in cricket, football, tennis and rugby attract many visitors. Horseback riding, fishing and golf are also favourite pastimes.

Accommodations in Bermuda range from elegant resorts to the privacy of cottage colonies and quaint bed and breakfast locales. There are no rental cars on the island, but getting around is easy in taxis, scooters or buses, and the speed limit is a mere 35 km per hour. Truly a place to relax, unwind and enjoy the beauty of paradise.
